“And if thy right hand offend thee, cut if off and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.” Matthew 5:30
How harsh does this verse seem to you? To actually cut off your right hand. God uses the illustration of the right hand, the hand that is probably the most important in functioning on this earth. But God would rather it be cast away and a person be maimed for life than for that person to be completely whole physically and not know Him.
God veritably does some of his own trimming of Christians. Sometimes it does seem harsh. He cuts away offending things to make us lovely in His sight. No, it probably doesn’t look very pretty to the rest of the world. Sometimes it is our health, our dignity, our pride. We may seem maimed to unbelievers. And that trimming really hurts at times. It takes awhile to get used to not having that part we are now missing. We have to readjust our way of doing things, depend more on Him than ourselves. But He knows exactly what needs to be pruned to make us lovely.
This body is temporary. It seems so important to us now , but it will be nothing but dust in the future, and we will not miss it. God is perfecting our souls, but He does not care about perfecting your temporary physical body. In verse 48 of this chapter, it reads, “Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect.” He is working at perfecting the true you and making you lovely in His sight.
