Victory In The Face Of Defeat (Part 5)

God may not choose to heal us physically, but he definitely wants us to be healthy spiritually, and it takes a little effort.  Think of what it takes to make a body healthier.  You have to feed it things that are nutritious and stay away from foods that will harm.  The more harmful foods are by far more tempting and more readily available.  Healthier foods usually cost more and take more time to prepare.  Parallel that with what you feed your soul.  You should be feeding your soul things that will make it healthier, and stay away from the “junk.”  The “junk” is so prevalent.  It is everywhere.  Turn on the TV, and your mind and soul are bombarded by things that are not beneficial to your spiritual condition.  In fact, most of it is very harmful.  Just by watching different TV shows, how desensitized have we gotten to adultery, swearing, fornication and murder?  Feeding your soul is going to take a little work, by searching the Word of God, finding encouraging speakers and programs both on the TV and internet.  You are what you eat!  What you feed your soul is going to show on the outside.  It is just so easy when you are not feeling well to just sit back and vegetate in front of the TV.  Sometimes you feel like you deserve it.  But be careful of what you put into your mind, it can be hazardous to your spiritual health.

Physical health also requires exercise.  I am not sure I know of anyone who loves to push their body to the limit to gain strength and endurance.  The temptation is to just relax and take it easy.  After all, we’re sick and hurting.  But spiritually we have to push ourselves and exercise our faith to be healthy also.  We all get plenty of opportunities to exercise our faith, but do we make the most of those opportunities?  In actuality, exercising our faith is taking all the weight off of our shoulders and putting it on God’s.  He is all the strength we need to handle the heavy loads we carry.  So many times we stubbornly hold onto our problems, do not turn them completely over to God and exercise our faith, which in turn just makes our personal faith get weaker.

  1. You are sooo right. Feeding the soul is more important than feeding the body;the body is temporal but the soul is eternal. Both need nutrition but our human nature reverses the order and usually places body (the flesh) over the soul.
