I would like to end this topic with the story behind the great hymn “Tis So Sweet To Trust In Jesus.” So many of these precious hymns were written through people who did in essence reach the end of their rope but relied on God during that time.
The hymn was written by Louisa Stead. She and her husband were at a beach, having a picnic, watching their daughter, Lily, play. They heard a cry for help from a boy who was in the water. Mr. Stead tried to rescue the boy but was pulled under the water when the boy panicked. Mr. Stead drowned.
Without her husband to support her, Louisa became very poor, and it was quite difficult to make ends meet. But God always provided for her, and she learned to trust Him for everything. It is said that one day when she had virtually nothing left, she found that someone had left food and money on her doorstep. It was on that day she wrote the following words:
‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to take Him at His word;
Just to rest upon His promise,
And to know, “Thus saith the Lord.”
Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just from sin and self to cease;
Just from Jesus simply taking
Life and rest, and joy and peace.
I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee,
Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend;
And I know that Thou art with me,
Wilt be with me to the end.
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er;
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
Oh, for grace to trust Him more!
